Description
448 - LOW 87 / HT-347 R7 PCGS XF40 Struck on a clipped planchet. Oliver & Phardice Boutwell Bakers & Confectioners, Troy New York 1835. Signed *T beneath Wheat Sheaf for engraver True of Albany. This issue seems to have been issued in very modest numbers, years later Oliver Boutwell was one of the most prolific issuers of Civil War tokens. One of the classic rarities of the Hard Times series. Thought to one of just ten or so known and usually only available in lower grades, more often than not with problems. The Dice & Hicks, Zeddies, Brand specimen, a sharp EF with cleaned and lacquered obverse brought $7,475 in Stack's July 2008 sale. From the Gilbert Steinberg collection earlier Stack's October 1989 sale, where it realized $5,775. (8000-12000)
