23 - 71/148 a Unlisted NGC MS64 BN Attractively toned with nearly Proof Like reverse. 1863 Indian Head with a balding bearded man thought to be John Stanton on the reverse. Stanton manufactured the vast majority of Indian Head Civil War tokens. From an image supplied by the president of the firm's current incarnation, Long-Stanton Manufacturing, it seems clear this is Stanton. See the link http://www.longstanton.com/About.aspx. There is a more complete version on the companies home page but you need to wait for it to cycle to the front. Very rare obverse die and unlisted variety, the die combination is currently listed only in Tin Plate which we have never seen offered publicly. An EF example of the much more available R7 84/148 a brought $1,105.50 in our June 2005 sale. From the Mark Glazer and Henry South collections. (4000-6000)
