161 - MI060aA-2a R8 NGC XF40 BN Wm. Brooks, Battle Creek & Elkhart Indiana. Very rare and desirable variety with Indiana Primitive reverse and apparent Childs obverse. Fuld lists the -1a and -3a obverses as different, we can detect no difference other than the presence or lack of a complete beaded border. Brooks may have retained possession of the Childs die after the striking of -3a, -4a and -5a and then at a later date had Higgins strike -1a and -2a. Rare variety, the AU in our May 2001 sale realized $260.70. From the Cliff Temple collection earlier from James Kelley on May 7, 1943 for $0.35. (300-400)
