Description
43 - 232A/403 a R9 VG Details With reverse dent. Struck on a larger than normal 22mm planchet. Extremely rare Indiana Primitive version of Scovill's Our Country die 231. Higgins' 232 die is a closer copy as he added the date 1864 just under the ornaments on this die. The date is weak on all examples and even more so here with just the top of the 8 and 6 visible with some effort. This is the only use of this die in the Store Card or Patriotic series and no more than 5 or 6 are known. The last example sold publicly was a retoned EF with small stain that brought $10,925 in Bowers and Merena's March 2003 sale. From the estate of Richard Rossa. (1000-1500)
