5 - 9/238A a R8 NGC AU58 Nice toning. 1863 Our Little Monitor. Made by die sinker Henry Higgins of Mishawaka Indiana. His products are often referred to as Indiana Primitive because of their crude nature. On this piece he used die 237 to create his version; the result was somewhat weak detail. Very rare reverse die that has been assigned the new designation 238A in the new Patriotic book. It is the lone use of this die and differs from the previously listed die 238 by a number of re-engraved denticles to the right of the water. Though a few examples, including this one, appear Copper, when examined carefully with either an edge rub or metal analysis all have proven to be Brass. We sold a Raw AU example also called Copper in our March 2010 auction that realized $1,980. From the Wayne Stafford collection from Mark Glazer January 2006. (2000-3000)
