300 - TN690D-9a R8 NGC MS64 BN Trace Red on the obverse and nicely toned. McKay & Lapsley, Nashville with rare 500 denomination reverse die 1405 struck in Copper. Issued by African-American Barbers Alfred McKay and Daniel Lapsley who were located at 28 North College. Very rare town and merchant. The reverse die 1405 is also very rare and interestingly MC KA is visible in the field to the right of the last 0 in 500. It would seem this relates directly to the issuer McKay but this die was also used by Walker & Napier also of Nashville and White & Swann of Huntsville Alabama. We sold a Raw AU+ Details retoned example for $3,190 in our June 2005 auction. From the Lumberton and Steve Tanenbaum collections, earlier from Dave Schenkman. (4000-6000)
