Description
206 - OH165BWa-2a R8 NGC MS65 RB 30% Red, mostly on the obverse. One Hair Cut Hill. The Hill refers to William Hill an African-American Barber located at 32 Central in Cincinnati Ohio. Hill also issued tokens for a Shave and $5.00, though what the later was good for is as yet unknown. We sold an NGC MS64 RB example in December 2018 for $1,134 on eBay. From the Lumberton, Steve Tanenbaum and Richard Crosby collections, earlier from Larry Dziubek in April 1998. (1500-2000)
Questions & Answers
Q:
Being that the letters in ONE and HILL are larger than haircut, it may have been intended to read - ONE HILL haircut. Anyway, the question being is, what time frame would this token issued.

A:
There are three obverse die varieties in addition to this version, a One Shave Hill and a $5.00 Hill. They all are though to be issued by Cincinnati Barber William Hill. He is listed in both the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1862 he was at 32 Central.
