382 - TN690C-5a R9 Raw VF Details A bit porous. D. L. Lapsley & Co., Nashville Tennessee 25 struck in Copper. Very rare town and merchant and one of only a handful of Civil War tokens known to have been issued by African-Americans. Per the Store Card book the merchants were Barbers and Daniel L. Lapsley in particular was heavily involved in politics during Reconstruction and the early Civil Rights movement. By the 1870 census he was listed as a justice of the peace. We sold a NGC MS63 example of the R9 -1a variety for $4,400 in our June 2011 sale. From the Bob Adams collection. (1500-2000)
