Description
331 - OH165FXa- 9a R8 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red and nicely toned. Steamer Lancaster No. 4, Cincinnati Ohio muled with 1860 dated No Submission to the North reverse . This ship had a short but interesting life, launched in January 1861 for the Cincinnati - New Richmond trade. It was later used in April 1862 to ferry wounded soldiers from the battle of Pittsburg Tennessee. Beginning in June 1864 it ran troops and supplies from New Orleans to Vicksburg and in August came under attack near Natchez Mississippi. It snagged and sunk in just ten feet of water south of Portland Missouri on November 18, 1864. Formerly TN600E-9a now listed under Cincinnati as the location of David Gibson & Co. its owner and original base of operations. Vary rare, the first we have seen offered made all the more desirably with the Confederate related reverse. From the Tampa collection. Reverse Die: 1426. (2000-3000)
