747 - MILLER NY 951H Raw AU+ Somewhat dark and mottled toning perhaps an attempt at Bronzing by the manufacturer. H. B. West's Famous Trained Dogs, New York with obverse picture of two dogs pulling man in a carriage muled with Doremus & Nixon Steamboat reverse stuck in Copper with Plain edge. Very rare, Rulau states "only 1 struck" Tanenbaum collection. This is not the Tanenbaum piece which is brilliant with much red. Steve Tanenbaum also had an example of NY 951G (1 known per Rulau) with toning similar to this piece while the Dave Bowers example is brilliant with much red. Perhaps the maker intended both of these die varieties to be separate unique varieties, Copper and Bronzed. Rulau refers to the Tanenbaum example as being lot 850 in Woodward's June 22, 1886 auction and perhaps that is where the mintage number originates. We do not have that catalog, but if any reader does we would love to hear that lot description as well as any surrounding lots that may relate. From the Dave Bowers collection. (400-500)
