Description
491 - LOW 87 / HT-347 R7 Raw AG Counterstamped HE?????? / NEW-YO(RK) / BROTH(ERS) Oliver & Phardice Boutwell Bakers & Confectioners, Troy New York 1835. Signed *T beneath Wheat Sheaf for engraver True of Albany. This issue seems to have been issued in very modest numbers, years later Oliver Boutwell was one of the most prolific issuers of Civil War tokens. One of the classic rarities of the Hard Times series. The stamp is intriguing but in the absence of a more complete specimen an exact attribution seems doubtful. Thought to one of just ten or so known and usually only available in lower grades, more often than not with problems. We sold a Raw FINE+ Details dark and porous for $3,316.50 in our May 2001 sale. (750-1000)
