Description
397 - N. Y. & N. E. R. R. / SEAL & PRESS CO on reverse of 1861 Cent with 72 on obverse Raw VF Coin VG. One would suspect this is for the New York and New England Railroad. Rulau dates to 1882-1886 but gives no additional information. Interestingly we found a Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad annual pass dated 1895 that indicated Not Good on N. Y. & N. E. R. R. Trains. There are a number of similar stamps for various railroads, all quite rare. They are all likely tests of presses of medal seals used to secure railroad freight cars. Often times on these counterstamps the impression is uneven or off the planchet, this attractive piece is a happy exception. Rulau plate specimen. Rulay NY Un 20 From the Dave Bowers collection from Steve Tanenbaum. (100-150)
