371 - H. M. GREELY and ARTIST on obverse of 1859 Cent Raw VF Coin GOOD with dent or flaw at date. Per a November 2006 World Exonumia catalog a Horace M. Greely of Syracuse New York was listed in the 1870 Census as a dry good clerk, and in the 1880 Census as owning a "Mili. Business", selling women's hats. This name portion of this stamp is known on a number of coins dating from primarily the 1860's. The ARTIST stamp, usually related to Photography, is of a different style, separately placed and only known on this single example. The Greely stamp is also known with that of a M. A. ABBEY which may be a further clue in firm attribution. (75-100)
