Description
196 - IL535B-1a R9 Raw VF Details Dark and quite porous. Smith's Billiard Saloon 5 Cts. Union 1863. Believed to be issued by Richard W. Smith of Macomb, Illinois who is found in the 1864 IL Gazetteer as a saloonkeeper. This very rare merchant was formerly listed as SNL-3b, but it is now listed under Macomb in the new 3rd edition of the Civil War Store Card book. A Raw VF Detail porous with light marks example of the more available -1a variety brought $1,950 in our December 2012 sale. While writing this description we realized we had sold the second known example of this variety in our February 2014 sale mistakenly called a -1a. It was a nice Raw EF that brought $3,472 on a (2,000-3,000) estimate...perhaps our bidders were more observant. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection and the current Fuld Plate Specimen for the merchant. (750-1000)
