Description
260 - BRADFORD / WORKHOUSE on the obverse of an 1815 Great Britain Three Shilling Bank token Raw EF Coin VG. Originally issued in Bradford Lancashire Great Britain. The Workhouse, the English equivalent of a poorhouse, lost its dies for striking tokens in an 1813 fire and resorted to counterstamping coins, mostly 1812 Birmingham Penny tokens. Late around 1906 Samuel H. Hamer, of Dalton & Hammer fame, made restrikes. It is thought that all silver pieces are restrikes. Now after 110 years quite collectable and an interesting connection to one of England's token pioneers. From the John J. Ford collection Stack's Bowers August 2013. (150-200)
