Description
582 - MILLER MA 69 Raw MS63 With Bronzed like finish. Jos. H. Merriam Die Sinker Boston Massachusetts with John C. Heenan Champion of America 1859 reverse struck in Copper 31mm though this example has more of a Bronzed appearance similar to US Mint medals from this period. Heenan was a very popular boxer from an era when it was still illegal and before the use of gloves. He had a famous 37 round fight with Thomas Sayer (also a Merriam subject) in 1860. Later they toured together reenacting their match. A MS63 example of the more traditional Copper sold for $160 in our August 2015 sale. Rulau Ma Bo 78 From the Steve Tanenbaum, Charles Litman and Don Miller collections. (150-200)
