Description
579 - MILLER MA 68 Raw MS63 With Bronzed like finish. Jos. H. Merriam Die Sinker Medals Struck In Gold, Silver, Copper Or Tin, Boston Massachusetts with Thomas Sayers Champion Of England 1859 reverse struck in Copper 31mm though this example has more of a Bronzed appearance similar to US Mint medals from this period. Sayers was a very popular boxer from an era when it was still illegal and before the use of gloves. He had a famous 37 round fight with John Heenan (also a Merriam subject) in 1860. Later they toured together reenacting their match. Another more traditional Copper MS63 brought $151 in our August 2015 auction. Rulau MA Bo 77 From the Steve Tanenbaum, Charles Litman and Don Miller collections. (150-200)
