Description
481 - LOW 128 / HT-309 R5 Raw FINE+ With some tiny planchet cracks and minor surface roughness. R. E. Russell IOU 12 Cent Token 1837 Columbia South Carolina struck in German Silver. Long assumed to be from New York City due to its association with the Feuchtwanger pieces, ground breaking research by Aaron Packard shows it was actually issued by Robert E. Russell of Columbia South Carolina. Russell operated a Botany Garden which included a Public Bath. Long one of the most desirable Hard Times tokens and rare, particularly so problem free. Demand is certain to increase due to its new more exotic location and fascinating story. We sold a problem free VF for $2,115 in our June 2011 auction. From the Maurice Shepherd collection earlier from PCAC May 1997 sale. (1000-1500)
