Description
139 - PA-54-100Bb R8 NGC MS63 30% Bright. J. A. Garman Sutler 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers 100 Cents. This is the largest denomination for this prolific issuer, though there is a "Blank Check" example with no stamp. On this variety the last zero is presumed to have been added for nefarious reasons resulting in the need for this Sutler to add Xs to 5 and 10 Cent varieties to prevent alteration. On this variety the first to digits are usually too far to the right to easily accommodate the final number. More definitively the Zeros are from different punches, the first having a oval interior while the second is more squarish. A fascinating piece with a great story. A raw MS62 brought $395 in our October 2011 auction. Formerly PA I-100B. From the Dr. W. Stokes Houck III collection. (750-1000)
