498 - MILLER MA 68A Raw MS63 50% Bright. Jos. H. Merriam Die Sinker Medals Struck In Gold, Silver, Copper Or Tin, Boston Massachusetts with Thomas Sayers Champion Of England 1859 reverse struck in White Metal 31mm and Unlisted by Adams and Rulau. Sayers was a very popular boxer from an era when it was still illegal and before the use of gloves. He had a famous 37 round fight with John Heenan (also a Merriam subject see following lot) in 1860. Later they toured together reenacting their match. Rulau Ma Bo 77A From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Rich Hartzog April 1976. (200-300)
