367 - WI510AM-1a R5 NGC MS65 BN 10% Red all on reverse. Struck on an Oversized Planchet and so noted on the NGC holder. D. Stoffel Provisions, Milwaukee. Steve Tanenbaum loved errors and oddities and this one is a real mystery. The obverse is oversized and appears stretched similar to a late die state brockage while the reverse is a needle sharpe normal strirke that is perfectly centered in a larger than normal 21mm planchet. Our thought is that this token was stuck to the reverse die and was used to strike a number of brockage tokens. Since no brockages are currently known for this merchant they were likely scrapped at the time of manufacture as inferior product and yet somehow this piece managed to escape through serendipity or the intervention of a mint employee. Why they didn't find the brockage intriguing as well and keep a pair together we can only wonder. Please let us know if you have a competing theory. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection, earlier from John Canfield in June 1976. (500-750)
