Description
227 - MI450O-3a R9 Raw EF Details Dark and porous. Geo. W. Underwood Druggist, Hillsdale. A rare muling of the Childs obverse die with the Gleason reverse die 1185. Four Hillsdale merchants used Childs as a diesinker. French & Parsons, Mott & Bro., Underwood and Mott & Co., the first three being Druggists and all four are dated 1861. Gleason's dated tokens are all 1863. The obverse die was apparently retained by the Childs customer and later pressed into service again by the hometown Gleason mint. To date only Underwood and Mott & Bro. are known with such mule but be on the alert one day perhaps French & Parsons or Mott & Co. may turn up with a Gleason reverse. The last example we auctioned was a retoning VF, with two light scratches and planchet cutter mark in our March 1997 sale that brought $366.30. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection from John Canfield May 1975. (300-400)
