747 - Bolen JAB-31 UNC Details Stained with some light marks in the right obverse field. A Piece Of Copper Taken From The Wreck Of The Rebel Ram Merrimac In 1862 By J. F. Pratt, A. A. Surg. U. S. A. Only Ten Struck with Lincoln reverse signed Bolen struck in Copper 25mm with Plain edge. Exceedingly rare, only ten were struck before the die of the Merrimac side was defaced or destroyed. Of those ten, Bolen's personal specimen is now in the ANS museum and another example was donated in 1869 to the New England Numismatic and Archaeological Society. Musante lists just three auction appearances since: Woodward's November 1878 sale, this example's 1982 sale and a nice Uncirculated example from the Zabriskie collection that sold for $1,650 in June 1999. Ex. Dave Schenkman collection and earlier from a August 1982 Paul Kopenhaver sale. (4000-6000)
