Description
664 - RULAU Pa Ph 22 VF+ With 10% of original Gilt plating still remaining. Compliment Of John H. Clay Philadelphia Pennsylvania Veteran with vintage fire carriage pictured struck in Gilt Brass with a Plain edge. John H. Clay offered a hose carriage to the city in 1898 with the stipulation that the town erect a suitable building for it and the company be named after his brother George. The George Clay Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company still operates in the Philadelphia borough of Conshohocken. This likely dates the token to 1898 or soon after rather than the 1866-1889 period currently assigned to it in Rulau. From the Richard Crosby collection. (50-75)
