Struck over another token of some sort and the mottling may be a result of grime or circulation of the undertype as it seems to help highlight the lettering. Only HON. STEPHE stand out with more than two letters seen together. This could indicate it is over another different and unknown Girard token or medal. R. Lovett Jr. tribute to Stephen Girard The Benefactor of Philadelphia struck in Copper with Plain edge (though the undertype appears to have had a reeded edge that is now flattened but discernible). Unlisted in Adams, Miller and Rulau. Quite rare, interesting and worthy of study. A MS63 Proof Like example in Brass also unlisted brought $345 in our February 2014 sale.
