543 - MILLER NY 289 R5 NGC MS63 30% Bright. Green & Wetmore, New York with picture of Anvil, Hammer and Tongs struck in Brass with a Reeded edge. Despite similar rarity ratings this version is much scarcer than the Plain edge variety NY 288. Once thought to be a Hard Times token Low 296 HT-273A, it is now believed to predate that period. A VF+ example of NY 288 sold for $215 in our December 2012 auction. From the John Ford collection earlier from Allen Brand February 1955. (1000-1500)
