Description
521 - HT-574A Unlisted FINE With some light scratches, well struck for variety on a seemingly larger than normal planchet with much detail that is often missing. H. WHITCOM(B) and 1833 both in raised letters in two rectangular punches on the obverse of a Spanish 1 Real from the 1792-1808 time period. Henry Whitcomb is listed in Adams New York in both the 1830 and 1840 census. Rulau listed the stamp Whitcomb. Adams as HT-574 and attributes it to Henry Whitcomb yet this piece despite being dated 1833 is listed in Rulau Early American tokens under Mavericks as Mav 58. This is the Rulau Plate Specimen. A nicer example of HT-574 brought $645 in our June 2013 auction. (300-400)
