Description
475 - LOW 182 / HT-399A R8 EF Or a bit better. Charles W. Bender Philadelphia 1842 struck in Silver on a very thin planchet. Bender was the proprietor of the Star Hotel at 71 Dock Street. Rare merchant and very rare variety. An AU example of the more available German Silver variety realized $4,565 in our June 2005 sale. This very example brought $10,925 in Stack's July 2008 sale of the Dice-Hicks collection. From the Steve Tanenbaum, Dice-Hicks, John Ford, Dave Bowers and Don Miller collections earlier from Stack's October 1954 sale. (8000-12000)
