284 - OH165EO-5b R9 VF Henry Porter 95 Fifth Street, Cincinnati with very rare 1401A reverse die struck in Brass. Henry operated as a barber at various Cincinnati addresses during the 1860's. By directory research John Ostendorf determined he was located at this address in 1865 and continued there until 1867. In the 1860 and 1870 census records Henry Porter is listed as a black male barber born in Tennessee and living respectively in Cincinnati and Xenia making him the first African American to issue a token. Will remain in the main text of the next Store Card book. Another VF brought $1,550 in our June 2011 auction. From the Henry South collection earlier from PCAC's June 1988 sale. (1500-2000)
