639 - LOW 283 / HT-324 R6 MS62 Trace Red on the reverse. Squire & Merritt Ship Chandlers and Rope Makers, New York. A very confusing merchant to attribute with many die and sub varieties. Adding to the confusion Rulau's listing and spacing where the descriptions of the varieties proceed the listing rather than follow it as in other sections of his book. This is die combination 3-B with a Reeded edge and no counterstamp. Quite rare in Uncirculated condition, an AU sold for $477.40 in our June 2005 sale. From the John Ford collection earlier from F. C. C. Boyd in March 1958. In a NGC holder graded MS62 BN. (750-1000)
