Description
637 - LOW 274E / HT-308E R8 AU+ But with light reverse scratches. B. Ruggles Dentists Gold, New York stuck on a Thin planchet with a diagonally reeded edge and dentiles (beaded) rather than raised Plain boarder. The varieties listed as HT-307B and HT-308E appear to be the same with the slightly larger diameter resulting in the beading being visible on each side as in this 27mm specimen. We believe base on the Vlack listings that the HT-307B has vertical reeding while HT-308E has diagonal reeding and have chosen to call this HT-308E. Both should likely be listed under HT-308 as the central design and lettering match and are completely different from HT-307. This is a fascinating piece in need of further study for while the design appears identical to HT-308 the edge treatment and planchet stock are quite different. A very rare token what ever it is called. We are aware of only one other example, from Bowers & Merena's November 1996 sale of the Vlack collection where both listings and Rulau's plates originated. From the John Ford collection earlier from F. C. C. Boyd in March 1958. (1000-1500) See pictures.
