511 - LOW 139A / HT-464A R9 Raw EF Counterstamped YK. S S B 1837 struck in Brass. Long considered a maverick with issuer and location yet to be identified. Scovill Superfine Buttons and Scovill Superior Buttons have been suggested in part due to design similarity with clothing buttons of which Scovill was a major manufacturer. This piece is believed to be Unique and the counterstamp YK seems to be purposefully executed directly on top of the SSB initials. This may indicate a change in ownership that could eventually be a key to future attribution. Rare and enigmatic, a Raw VF+ example of the much more available non counterstamped variety brought $1,000 in our January 2016.
