507 - LOW 128 / HT-309 R5 Raw EF With some light marks and planchet crack. Also counterstamped with two tiny D's indicating it was once part of the William Forrester Dunham collection. He counterstamped his entire collection including his 1804 Dollar! R. E. Russell IOU 12½ Cent Token 1837 Columbia South Carolina struck in German Silver. Long assumed to be from New York City due to its association with the Feuchtwanger pieces, ground breaking research by Aaron Packard shows it was actually issued by Robert E. Russell of Columbia South Carolina. Russell operated a Botany Garden which included a Public Bath. Long one of the most desirable Hard Times tokens and rare, particularly so problem free. Demand is certain to increase due to its new more exotic location and fascinating story. We sold a Raw problem free VF for $2,115 in our June 2011 auction. From the Robert Williams, Dave Bowers and William Dunham collections earlier from our December 2012 sale were it brought $875 before it was known to be from Columbia South Carolina rather than New York City.
