Hard Times tokens HT 38-41, HT 53-55 and HT-59-60 have long been thought to be the work of Charles Bushnell and called the "Bushnell" series. In more recent times by a collaboration of J. N. T. Levick and Henry Davenport. These exceedingly rare tokens have long been collected as part of the series, first being cataloged by Lyman Low in 1899. Their first auction appearance dates to the early 1880's. They are often found dark and porous, perhaps pickled or artificially aged. Beautiful and untreated pieces are even rarer.
