96 - IL762A-2do R10 PCGS MS64 30% Bright struck over IL762A-3d. V. A. Lake Grain Dealer, Rockton Illinois 1864 struck in Copper Nickel. Unique variety from a very scarce town. This token is struck over another Rockton token with a Prairie Flower reverse. This token was the basis for Steve Tanenbaum's belief that Copper Nickel tokens with the 1069 Prairie Flower die had an intended mintage of one, while Copper Nickel tokens with a 1047 reverse had an intended mintage of two. The reasoning was that, by mistake, they struck two examples of this merchants tokens with 1069. Then when discovered, struck it again with the 1047 reverse to cover up the error and avoid the potential wrath of the commissioning customer. To date no Copper Nickel token with 1069 reverse has a population of more than one, while Copper Nickel tokens with 1047 are listed as both Unique and R9. We sold a Raw MS64 example of IL762A-2d for $2,612.50 in our December 2005 sale. From the Dave Bowers and George Fuld collections, in one of Dave's special holders with picture and facsimile signature. (2000-3000)
