Description
401 - LOW 128 / HT-309 R5 NGC XF40 R. E. Russell IOU 12½ Cent Token 1837 Columbia South Carolina struck in German Silver. Long assumed to be from New York City due to its association with the Feuchtwanger pieces, ground breaking research by Aaron Packard shows it was actually issued by Robert E. Russell of Columbia South Carolina. Russell operated a Botany Garden which included a Public Bath. Long one of the most desirable Hard Times tokens and rare, particularly so problem free. Now just one of two rare South Carolina Hard Times token with a fascinating story and exotic location. We sold a Raw problem free VF for $2,115 in our June 2011 auction. From the Don Partrick, earlier from New Netherlands October 1975 sale. (3000-4000)
