Description
343 - ADMIT / TO / WOOD'S / MINSTRELS / 444 Bd WAY / NY on the obverse and reveres of a 1773 Spanish Two Real NGC AG3 Coin AG, counterstamp is a nice VF. These counterstamped 2 Reals were used as 25 Cent admission tickets to H. Wood's minstrels and Ethiopian band that performed at 444 Broadway from 1855 to 1857 when they move to 561 & 563 Broadway and instead issued struck silver tokens to serve as admission. Listed on NGC holder as Rulau NY 964D which Rulau describes as a latter type while this is an earlier type, perhaps NY 964E would be a better designation. Regardless a rare and apparently unlisted type. From the John J. Ford collection Stack's Bowers August 2013. (200-300)
