Description
342 - VICTORIA on Civil War Token NGC VF20 BN Coin FINE. It is thought that this is a Civil War era Political counterstamp with the Queen of England's name counterstamped just below Beware and above the Copperhead Snake on Civil War Patriotic token 136/397. Through much of the war there was a great fear in the North that England could take the side of the South. This specimen was featured in “The Wealth of the South and Beware Victoria” appearing in the Spring 1970 (V4N1) issue of the CWTS Journal, which told the story of how perilously close Great Britain came to recognizing the Confederacy, an act which author Benj Fauver suggested would have resulted in war between the United States and the United Kingdom. From the Mark Glazer and Benj Fauver collections. (300-400)
