258 - 62/62 a R10 NGC AU55 BN 1863 Indian Head Single Die Doubleheader. One of the rarest types of Civil War tokens. These are normally thought to be the work of idle hands at the manufacturer. A token was struck uniface against another blank planchet or smooth surface then flipped over and struck again in the same manner. This usually results in the side first struck being somewhat squashed or distorted as on this example. They can also result from an odd set of striking errors which would normally result in the same type of appearance. We sold an NGC XF45 example of the equally rare 87/87 in our July 2014 sale that realized $1,485. From the Mark Glazer collection. (2000-3000)
