Description
688 - MILLER PA 203W Unlisted Raw VF+ Industrial Works Philadelphia Pennsylvania with George Washington reverse die struck in Copper Plain edge 22.5mm. Completely unlisted and presumable issued by the Bement & Dougherty Industrial Works that operated in Philadelphia during the 1860s. Steve Tanenbaum, the tokens former owner, thought this to be Unique and a Civil War token. The reverse die is the obverse of Baker 280 / GW-813 and which has Civil War Patriotic token die 349A featuring canons and flags and found with 1864 dated Lincoln die 131A. Still Musante follow Rulau and Fuld to date circa 1870. Additionally, the merchant is ambiguous enough to defy concrete attribution. Finally, if it is Bement & Dougherty there were in business outside of the War years. Regardless a very important unlisted Washingtonia merchant token, quite possibly Unique. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection. (400-500)
