The description is a composite of both sides Probably the stamp of John Stephenson Company a street car and omnibus maker at 47 East 27th Street in New York. The company was founded in 1831 as the John Stephenson Car Company and changed its name to John Stephenson Company in 1867 and lasting many decades. A listing, admittedly incomplete, of patents of the firm does not list this date, however, it does show they were very active in the 1870's. From the Dave Bowers and Steve Tanenbaum collections.
