394 - TN690C-1d R10 NGC MS66 60% Bright with very nice cartwheel luster. D. L. Lapsley & Co., Nashville Tennessee 1864 struck in Copper Nickel. Very rare town and merchant and one of only a handful of Civil War tokens known to have been issued by African-Americans. Per the Store Card book the merchants were Barbers and Daniel L. Lapsley in particular was a was heavily involved in politics during Reconstruction and the early Civil Rights movement. By the 1870 census he was listed as a justice of the peace. We sold a NGC MS63 example of the R9 -1a variety for $4,400 in our June 2011 sale. Reverse Die: 1047. (4000-6000)
