Description
152 - 425/425 a R9 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red. Single Die Doubleheader. 1863 within wreath Single Die Doubleheader. One of the rarest types of Civil War tokens. These are normally thought to be the work of idle hands at the manufacturer. A token was struck uniface against another blank planchet or smooth surface then flipped over and struck again in the same manner. This usually results in the side first struck being somewhat squashed or distorted as on this example. They can also result from an odd set of striking errors which would normally result in the same type of appearance. Very rare die in the Patriotic series. We sold a NGC XF45 example of the equally rare but of a much more common die 87 in our July 2014 sale that realized $1,485 in spirited bidding. From the Mark Glazer and Larkin Wilson collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder. (2000-3000)
