Description
22 - 58/58 a R10 NGC AU55 BN Single Die Doubleheader. 1863 Indian Head signed L. Roloff large 24mm Single Die Doubleheader struck in Copper and believed to be Unique. One of the rarest types of Civil War tokens and a specialty of Patriotic token collector Mark Glazer who assembled the largest collection of these by far. These are normally thought to be the work of idle hands at the manufacturer. A token was struck uniface against another blank planchet or smooth surface then flipped over and struck again in the same manner. This usually results in the side first struck being somewhat squashed or distorted as on this example. They can also result from an odd set of striking errors which would normally result in the same type of appearance. We sold a NGC XF45 example of the equally rare 87/87 in our July 2014 sale that realized $1,485 in spirited bidding. From the Mark Glazer collection and so noted on the NGC holder. (1500-2000)
