143 - Civil War Soldiers ID Tag Raw EF Holed for suspension with 10% original gilt remaining mostly on the struck side. War of 1861 United States with M. F. Moore Co. K. 13th Reg. N.H. V. Portsmouth punched into the blank reverse. Listed as stock tag Eagle 5A in Maier and Stahl's book on Identification Discs of Union Soldiers in the Civil War. Brass 28mm. Martin F. Moore enlisted August 21st 1862 at the age of 18 and was the regimental musician for Company B of the 13th NH Volunteer Infantry and later for Company K beginning on June 20th 1864. He mustered out June 21st, 1865. It is interesting to note that the K in Co. K on this tag is struck over a B indicating this diligent soldier kept his information up to date. An internet search also turned up sales records for his personal diaries for 1864 and 1865. A fascinating piece of history. (1000-1500)
