110 - 498/499 Iron R8 Raw AU 10% Bright with nice luster. The First Ironclad 1862 Made From the Armor Plate Of The Merrimac. The Iron from the Merrimac was not recovered until well after the Civil War and consequently it has been delisted, however it is still collected along with the series as an important war relic. A bit dark slightly granular EF realized $1,550 in our August 2015 sale. This example, the finest we have seen offered, is from our July 2006 sale where it realized $3,550 in very spirited bidding (dueling phone bids long before we accepted internet bids). (4000-6000)
