22 - 69/69 a R10 NGC MS62 BN With traces of mint red all on the normally struck side. Unique single die doubleheader of a 1863 Indian Head. Mark Glazer is fascinated by mint errors and built and impressive collection of overstrikes and other interesting pieces. Most have been sold over the years but as with his other Patriotics, he retained the Best of the Best. Single die doubleheaders are certainly the rarest errors in the entire Civil War token field with only a dozen or so know of all varieties. These tokens were struck using a single die one side at a time. This resulted in the side struck first being slightly wavy. This particular piece is prototypical, note the slightly sunk in area at the center of the initial strike. A NGC XF45 example of 87/87 a brought $1,485 in our July 2014 sale. From the Mark Glazer collection acquired from Steve Tanenbaum and earlier part of the "Found I Wall" contemporary hoard of Civil War tokens found hidden in the wall of a New York City building being renovated. This would seem to indicate it is a "real" error rather than a mint concoction or something made specially for collectors. (2000-3000)
