Transportation Tokens:
Transportation tokens have been used in the United States for nearly 200 years. They are well cataloged in The Atwood-Coffee Catalogue of United States and Canadian Transportation Tokens by John M. Coffee, Jr. and Harold V. Ford now in its fifth edition. The have been use for fares on stage coaches, buses, horse cars, ferry, cable cars, omnibuses, street car, trains and boats just to name a few. More modern tokens since the 1920's often are smaller than a dime with a stencil cut out and generally have lower values of only one dollar or less while rare earlier pieces can bring many thousands. They are often collected geographically and there are literally thousands of token that can be readily purchased for a dollar or less making it a fertile area for the young or budget minded collector.
