Description
631 - Maine Shell Card Raw AU Plumer's Patent Boot Pat's June 4th, 1861 One Cent patent royalty stamp on a blank card. The outside lettering on this stamp is very difficult to decipher but based on another stamp it reads "Entered according to Act of Congress / in the year 1861 by J. C. Plumer in the / Clerk's office of the District Court / of the District of Massachusetts." The 1867 Eagle reverse is listed in the Bowers book and was used in Delaware, New York and most often Pennsylvania. J. C. Plumer of Portland Maine was issued patent number 32,487 for Improvement in Boots and Shoes on the stated date. The obverse type with a royalty stamp is unlisted and only one example for the entire state of Maine is listed in the new book. Two Cent patent royalty stamps are also known from this issuer but this is the only example we know of used in conjunction with a Shell Card. Very unusual. (300-400)
